Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their first meeting with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The organization is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in spring, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from more than 30 nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and persisting to build that bond is a step in the right direction," Hickey commented.

They added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
