Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
